Reconstruction in Raleigh is a craft job, not a checklist.

Raleigh’s housing stock spans seven decades. Inside the Beltline you find plaster walls, original-grade hardwood, and finish work from craftsmen who were setting trim by hand. North of Glenwood and out toward Wake Forest you find mid-century framing and 1970s drywall. Newer construction in North Raleigh and the edge towns mirrors what we see in Cary. A water loss in any of these eras has the same first two phases — extraction, drying — but the reconstruction is where the contractor either matches the home or re-engineers it badly.

Water damage repair is the rebuild: drywall, plaster patching, hardwood refinishing, paint, trim, cabinetry, and contents coordination. It is also the phase where the source has to be corrected — a roof penetration after a storm, a copper pipe that failed in a wall, an appliance hookup that gave way overnight — because finishing over an unrepaired source produces a cosmetic restoration and a recurring loss.

We do this work as the same firm that dried the home. Continuity matters more in Raleigh than almost anywhere we work, because the older the home the more details there are to carry from the dry-out crew to the finish crew. Handing it off between vendors loses information; doing it under one roof keeps the project clean.

Why it matters

Three failure modes, each one expensive in its own way.

Almost every botched reconstruction we are called to re-do in Raleigh fits one of these three patterns.

01

Closing the wall before the home is verified-dry traps the next problem inside.

Raleigh's housing stock spans seven decades — plaster-and-lath inside the Beltline, mid-century framing in North Hills, and modern engineered subfloor in the new builds farther out. Each of those assemblies retains moisture differently. Hanging new drywall on a hand-test reading is how a covered loss becomes an uncovered mold remediation a month later.

02

Cosmetic-only repair masks an unsolved source.

We are routinely called to Raleigh homes where a previous contractor replaced finishes after a storm event without ever investigating the entry point — a clogged window well, a flashing failure, a roof penetration around a vent stack. The room looks restored. The next thunderstorm reproduces the loss, and the homeowner is paying a second deductible on the same wall.

03

Unlicensed reconstruction in older Raleigh homes can void warranties and complicate the claim.

Mature housing stock often involves plaster repair, hardwood refinishing, and trim millwork that requires real craft. Modern engineered finishes carry installation warranties that require a licensed contractor on the work order. Patchwork by an unlicensed crew compromises both the result and the carrier's willingness to pay full scope.

Our approach

A four-step rebuild, verified at every gate.

Each step has an objective signal that has to land before the next step begins. No shortcuts, no guesswork — particularly not in older Raleigh homes where assumptions are costly.

  1. 01

    Post-drying verification

Before reconstruction begins, we re-meter framing, subfloor, and any retained materials with a calibrated moisture meter and compare against assembly-specific dry-standard targets. The reading — not the calendar — gates the rebuild.

  2. 02

    Material decisions

We walk the home with the owner. Hardwood, plaster, drywall, tile, and cabinetry each get an honest call: salvage-in-place, refinish, or replace. Original-era materials in older Raleigh homes are flagged for refinish-first wherever salvage is structurally and financially defensible.

  3. 03

    Reconstruction

Drywall, plaster repair, hardwood refinishing or replacement, paint, trim, finish carpentry, and cabinetry are completed by licensed crews. Where the original cause was a roof penetration, a window-well failure, or an appliance fitting, the source component is corrected — not papered over — before finish work resumes.

  4. 04

    Final inspection & documentation

We close out with photos, a full moisture log, an Xactimate-compatible scope, and the receipts your insurer expects. The home is documented as restored, on paper, in the format the carrier needs to release final payment.

★★★★★
We bought a new to us 1964 home last December and to no surprise, we had asbestos popcorn ceilings. We decided to remove the ceilings altogether versus just scraping them. To complicate things even more, we had a plumbing leak in a room that had previously been encapsulated, so we had to deal with insurance to cover a portion of the asbestos removal. Rusty and the whole team at Remtech were such a help from the first moment we spoke! They were responsive, flexible, and knowledgeable. They helped us get insurance what they needed. They even worked with us to do the removal work while we had to be out of town. Asbestos removal and dealing with insurance, especially as we were brand new to the home, was incredibly stressful. Working with Remtech was the opposite – they were helpful and easy to work with that I barely had to think about the work being done. It was a nice break for my brain! They also did a great job. We came home to a CLEAN house with no ceilings! While I’m hoping we never have to go through such a big project again, I know we’d be able to handle it because we can rely on Remtech.

As a General Contractor specializing in Bathroom & Kitchen remodel, we complete in excess of 250 bathroom upgrades each year. Regardless of our remodeling and construction experience and capabilities, when it comes to addressing the unforeseen hazardous and environmental conditions posed by mold, asbestos, and lead paints, we have a responsibility to our customers to partner with the best abatement specialist possible, and as proficient in abatement as we are kitchen and bath remodeling. Remtech has proven to be that reliable and trusted partner for both our customers and company. We highly recommend the Remtech Team.

A few months ago I used Remtech Envir. to remove asbestos from the ceiling of my home, and to this day I’m still amazed with their service that I’ve been meaning to write a review, and today’s the day! The whole process went through so smoothly because of their professionalism, punctuality and care. At the end of each day I received an update from Rusty who was the project manager which was super helpful, and because of their expertise I knew the job was getting done correctly. There was a lot of asbestos to remove, and they showed up and delivered hard work to get it done within the time frame that was initially discussed. So grateful we used their services! I would highly recommend!

Our church basement flooded and the old asbestos tiles curled up and had to be removed. Jeff Brewer came over to look at our problem, explained what they would do. He furnished a quote very quickly with a fair price. After checking with two other companies, Jeff’s instructive conversation, ease of manner, willingness to help and a fair price won him the work. As a former contractor, I know how backed up companies can be in their schedule. He told us of a target time about 4-6 weeks off, which was fine. He called a couple of weeks later and had an opening in his schedule and wanted to come earlier. That was great. Their staff arrived on time and delivered a very quick, professional and clean project. This allowed us to get our Fellowship Hall floored and back in operating condition prior to the start of the school year. It is a pleasure to work with a company that communicates well and delivers their service in a superior way.

Remtech came in and did a removal of asbestos when our home developed a leak and the sheetrock ceiling had to be removed. Got right to work, kept us informed every step of the way and did a great job of cleaning up. Would use them again in a heart beat!!

The cost was higher than expected, so I did not move forward at that time. I will use Remtech when I am ready to have the work done. They are very professional and take the time to answer any questions. The rep arrived on time, explained the process and provided the estimate. A very positive experience.

Frequently asked

Reconstruction questions, answered straight.

The five questions every Raleigh homeowner asks once drying is verified. The short version is below — the long version is a walkthrough.

Do you do the rebuild yourselves, or do you sub it out?

We self-perform the rebuild on the vast majority of Raleigh projects — drywall, plaster patching, paint, trim, hardwood refinishing, flooring, finish carpentry, and standard cabinetry. Continuity is the value: the technician who logged the wet materials is the technician closing the wall. For specialty work — historic plaster restoration, custom millwork, structural foundation repair — we coordinate with vetted local subs and stay general contractor of record on the claim.

How long does water damage repair take in Raleigh?

After drying is verified complete, a typical single-room reconstruction runs five to ten business days. A multi-room loss with hardwood refinishing, plaster repair, or cabinet replacement runs three to six weeks depending on lead times and the age of the home. Older Raleigh homes inside the Beltline take longer than newer construction farther out, because the materials and craft involved are more time-intensive. We give a calendar before we start.

Will the finishes match what was there before?

On paint, trim, and standard drywall, yes — we match sheen, color, and texture from the existing home. On hardwood, we sand and refinish to blend with adjacent rooms wherever the original species and grade are still in stock. On plaster, in older Raleigh homes, we patch and feather to match the existing texture rather than skimming a flat finish that would read as new construction. Where exact-match is not possible we present options up front, with cost differences on paper.

What does Xactimate-compatible scoping mean for my claim?

Xactimate is the scoping software your insurance carrier uses to value the loss. We document materials, square footage, demolition, and reconstruction line-items in the units and categories the adjuster's software expects. That alignment is the single biggest reason Raleigh homeowners working with us end up paid in full on a reconstruction claim — mismatched scope is the most common cause of underpayment, and it is entirely avoidable with the right paperwork.

Do you handle contents — furniture, electronics, personal items?

Yes. We coordinate contents-restoration on every project — pack-out to a controlled environment, cleaning and deodorizing of salvageable items, and a documented non-salvageable list for the carrier on what cannot be saved. For high-value or sentimental items — antiques, art, vintage furniture common in older Raleigh homes — we bring in a specialist contents-restoration partner. The homeowner does not have to manage two vendors.
