Removal is the easy part. Solving it is the work.

Mold remediation is, at its core, three problems stacked together: removing the visible contamination, stopping the spores from spreading during the work, and removing the conditions that allowed the mold to take hold in the first place. Skip any one of those and the project fails — not in three months, but eventually, and usually expensively.

We work the IICRC S520 protocol on every project — assessment, containment, HEPA filtration, EPA-registered antimicrobial treatment, structural drying, and post-remediation verification by an independent third party. Asheville’s mountain climate and older housing stock add a fourth requirement: stubborn root-cause work on vapor barriers, drainage, and dehumidification.

The deliverable is a clean envelope, a documented file, and a moisture-source repair that’s actually been addressed. Not a paint coat over the symptom.

Why it matters

Three ways DIY remediation tends to fail.

We get called to fix all three of these every season. The recurring theme is the same: shortcut on the protocol, pay twice.

01

Scrub-and-paint sends spores into the HVAC.

Disturbing a mold colony without negative-pressure containment aerosolizes spores. They settle in returns, on coils, in attic insulation, and inside ductwork — turning a localized issue into a whole-home one in a single afternoon.

02

The wall cavity always has more than the wall surface.

Visible growth on drywall is almost always smaller than the contamination behind it. Treating only what you can see leaves the cavity active, the framing colonized, and the conditions intact.

03

Without root-cause repair, it grows back.

Asheville’s mountain weather and older homes mean moisture is rarely a one-time event. Removing growth without fixing the leak, the grading, the vapor barrier, or the dehumidification just resets the clock.

Our approach

Mold remediation, to the protocol.

Every step is documented. Every step has a verification gate. The project closes when the numbers say it’s closed — not when the calendar says so.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Every project starts with a written scope — the affected area, the moisture source, the materials being removed, the containment plan, and the verification standard.

  2. 02

    Containment

Negative-pressure barriers and HEPA filtration isolate the work area. Decontamination chambers, sealed plastic, and dedicated airflow keep spores from migrating during removal.

  3. 03

    Removal & filtration

Affected materials are bagged out, surviving structure is HEPA-vacuumed, and air scrubbers run continuously. Asheville’s older framing often requires patient detail work that DIY scopes skip.

  4. 04

    Antimicrobial & PRV

Surviving structure is treated with EPA-registered antimicrobials, the assembly is dried below thresholds, and post-remediation verification — ideally by an independent third party — closes the file.

★★★★★
We bought a new to us 1964 home last December and to no surprise, we had asbestos popcorn ceilings. We decided to remove the ceilings altogether versus just scraping them. To complicate things even more, we had a plumbing leak in a room that had previously been encapsulated, so we had to deal with insurance to cover a portion of the asbestos removal. Rusty and the whole team at Remtech were such a help from the first moment we spoke! They were responsive, flexible, and knowledgeable. They helped us get insurance what they needed. They even worked with us to do the removal work while we had to be out of town. Asbestos removal and dealing with insurance, especially as we were brand new to the home, was incredibly stressful. Working with Remtech was the opposite – they were helpful and easy to work with that I barely had to think about the work being done. It was a nice break for my brain! They also did a great job. We came home to a CLEAN house with no ceilings! While I’m hoping we never have to go through such a big project again, I know we’d be able to handle it because we can rely on Remtech.

As a General Contractor specializing in Bathroom & Kitchen remodel, we complete in excess of 250 bathroom upgrades each year. Regardless of our remodeling and construction experience and capabilities, when it comes to addressing the unforeseen hazardous and environmental conditions posed by mold, asbestos, and lead paints, we have a responsibility to our customers to partner with the best abatement specialist possible, and as proficient in abatement as we are kitchen and bath remodeling. Remtech has proven to be that reliable and trusted partner for both our customers and company. We highly recommend the Remtech Team.

A few months ago I used Remtech Envir. to remove asbestos from the ceiling of my home, and to this day I’m still amazed with their service that I’ve been meaning to write a review, and today’s the day! The whole process went through so smoothly because of their professionalism, punctuality and care. At the end of each day I received an update from Rusty who was the project manager which was super helpful, and because of their expertise I knew the job was getting done correctly. There was a lot of asbestos to remove, and they showed up and delivered hard work to get it done within the time frame that was initially discussed. So grateful we used their services! I would highly recommend!

Our church basement flooded and the old asbestos tiles curled up and had to be removed. Jeff Brewer came over to look at our problem, explained what they would do. He furnished a quote very quickly with a fair price. After checking with two other companies, Jeff’s instructive conversation, ease of manner, willingness to help and a fair price won him the work. As a former contractor, I know how backed up companies can be in their schedule. He told us of a target time about 4-6 weeks off, which was fine. He called a couple of weeks later and had an opening in his schedule and wanted to come earlier. That was great. Their staff arrived on time and delivered a very quick, professional and clean project. This allowed us to get our Fellowship Hall floored and back in operating condition prior to the start of the school year. It is a pleasure to work with a company that communicates well and delivers their service in a superior way.

Remtech came in and did a removal of asbestos when our home developed a leak and the sheetrock ceiling had to be removed. Got right to work, kept us informed every step of the way and did a great job of cleaning up. Would use them again in a heart beat!!

The cost was higher than expected, so I did not move forward at that time. I will use Remtech when I am ready to have the work done. They are very professional and take the time to answer any questions. The rep arrived on time, explained the process and provided the estimate. A very positive experience.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered honestly.

The five most common questions Asheville homeowners ask before signing a remediation scope. Quick versions below — the rest happens by phone.

How long does a typical mold remediation take?

Project timelines depend on the scope. A localized bathroom remediation can finish in two to three days. A whole-home or large-cavity project, with significant material removal and structural drying, typically runs five to ten working days. Asheville projects sometimes take longer when older framing requires careful work or when the moisture source is in a difficult-to-access mountain crawlspace. We provide a written timeline in the project scope before any work begins.

Do we need to leave the house during remediation?

It depends on the scope, location of the work, and whether containment can fully isolate the area from living space. For small, localized projects with proper containment, families can usually stay. For larger projects, projects involving the HVAC system, or projects where vulnerable family members are present, we generally recommend temporary relocation. The decision is risk-based, not cost-based, and we’ll tell you straight which category your project falls into.

What is post-remediation verification and do I need it?

PRV is independent confirmation that the remediation worked — visual clearance plus, where indicated, air sampling compared against an outdoor control. We strongly recommend it for every project, performed by a third-party inspector or industrial hygienist rather than by us, so the verification is unimpeachable. PRV protects the homeowner in resale, insurance, and any future health questions.

Is bleach a substitute for professional remediation?

No. Bleach can lighten the appearance of mold on non-porous surfaces but does little on porous materials like drywall, wood framing, or insulation, where the colony has roots that bleach cannot reach. Spraying bleach on visible growth without containment also disperses spores. Professional remediation uses negative pressure, HEPA filtration, EPA-registered antimicrobials appropriate to the substrate, and physical removal of unsalvageable material.

Will insurance cover the work?

It depends on the cause of loss and the policy. Sudden, accidental water events — burst pipes, appliance failures, storm-driven intrusion — are often covered, with mold remediation as a consequential loss subject to policy sublimits. Long-term humidity issues and slow leaks are generally excluded. We document scope, materials, and remediation activities in the formats your carrier expects, and we’ve worked with the major North Carolina carriers on covered losses for over twenty years.
