Mold damage, repaired the right way.

Mold damage is what contamination leaves behind.

By the time most Asheville homeowners reach out about mold damage, the issue has already moved past surface growth. Drywall is crumbling, framing is stained, insulation has lost its R-value, and the original moisture source — a roof leak, a slow plumbing drip, a vented crawlspace pulling ground vapor — has been working on the structure for months or years.

The mountain climate makes it worse. Cool basements, finished walk-outs, and homes sited against hillsides all create the kind of vapor pressure that turns ordinary moisture into long-term substrate damage.

Restoration work is two jobs at once: stop the contamination and rebuild what it took. We do both, on one schedule, with one accountable team.

Where restorations fail

Three shortcuts that guarantee a callback.

We see them on every estimate we re-bid after a previous contractor walked away.

01

Cosmetic-only repair masks ongoing growth.

Painting over a stain or skim-coating new drywall over wet substrate hides the symptom while the colony keeps spreading behind it. We have opened walls a year later and found three times the original footprint.

02

An unrepaired vapor barrier brings it right back.

In Asheville's mountain climate, ground moisture and seasonal swings drive vapor into wall cavities and crawlspaces. If the barrier or drainage isn't fixed during restoration, the new framing becomes the next substrate.

03

Undocumented damage hurts your insurance claim.

Adjusters don't pay for what isn't on paper. Photos, moisture maps, material lists, and lab results turn a vague problem into a defensible scope — that's the difference between a partial reimbursement and a full one.

Our approach

From damage assessment to finished room.

One team, one schedule, one set of documentation. No coordinating between three subcontractors who blame each other when the rebuild swells with mold a year later.

  1. 01

    Damage scope assessment

We inventory every affected material — drywall, framing, insulation, subfloor, contents — and grade each one for cleanability versus replacement. The report goes to you and, if applicable, your insurer.

  2. 02

    Demolition of unsalvageable material

Porous materials with embedded growth come out. Containment, negative pressure, and HEPA filtration keep the rest of the home spore-free during the demo phase.

  3. 03

    Structural drying

Dehumidifiers, air movers, and moisture monitoring restore framing and surviving substrate to dry standard before any new material goes back. Build-back over wet wood is the single most common cause of recurrence.

  4. 04

    Restoration build-back

New drywall, insulation, flooring, and finishes — coordinated under one team so you don't manage three subcontractors. Mold-resistant materials are offered where the location warrants them.

★★★★★
We bought a new to us 1964 home last December and to no surprise, we had asbestos popcorn ceilings. We decided to remove the ceilings altogether versus just scraping them. To complicate things even more, we had a plumbing leak in a room that had previously been encapsulated, so we had to deal with insurance to cover a portion of the asbestos removal. Rusty and the whole team at Remtech were such a help from the first moment we spoke! They were responsive, flexible, and knowledgeable. They helped us get insurance what they needed. They even worked with us to do the removal work while we had to be out of town. Asbestos removal and dealing with insurance, especially as we were brand new to the home, was incredibly stressful. Working with Remtech was the opposite – they were helpful and easy to work with that I barely had to think about the work being done. It was a nice break for my brain! They also did a great job. We came home to a CLEAN house with no ceilings! While I’m hoping we never have to go through such a big project again, I know we’d be able to handle it because we can rely on Remtech.

Very fast, professional and responsive. Did floor asbestos abatement for our house for a very reasonable price and they were very quick to schedule to keep us within our very close timeline.

A few months ago I used Remtech Envir. to remove asbestos from the ceiling of my home, and to this day I’m still amazed with their service that I’ve been meaning to write a review, and today’s the day! The whole process went through so smoothly because of their professionalism, punctuality and care. At the end of each day I received an update from Rusty who was the project manager which was super helpful, and because of their expertise I knew the job was getting done correctly. There was a lot of asbestos to remove, and they showed up and delivered hard work to get it done within the time frame that was initially discussed. So grateful we used their services! I would highly recommend!

Our church basement flooded and the old asbestos tiles curled up and had to be removed. Jeff Brewer came over to look at our problem, explained what they would do. He furnished a quote very quickly with a fair price. After checking with two other companies, Jeff’s instructive conversation, ease of manner, willingness to help and a fair price won him the work. As a former contractor, I know how backed up companies can be in their schedule. He told us of a target time about 4-6 weeks off, which was fine. He called a couple of weeks later and had an opening in his schedule and wanted to come earlier. That was great. Their staff arrived on time and delivered a very quick, professional and clean project. This allowed us to get our Fellowship Hall floored and back in operating condition prior to the start of the school year. It is a pleasure to work with a company that communicates well and delivers their service in a superior way.

Remtech came in and did a removal of asbestos when our home developed a leak and the sheetrock ceiling had to be removed. Got right to work, kept us informed every step of the way and did a great job of cleaning up. Would use them again in a heart beat!!

The cost was higher than expected, so I did not move forward at that time. I will use Remtech when I am ready to have the work done. They are very professional and take the time to answer any questions. The rep arrived on time, explained the process and provided the estimate. A very positive experience.

Frequently asked

The questions that actually matter.

Short answers below. The longer ones happen on a walkthrough, in the room, with the materials in front of us.

What actually counts as mold damage?

Mold damage is what's left after the contamination has been there long enough to compromise materials — drywall paper softening, framing staining, insulation losing R-value, subfloor delaminating. Surface growth on a non-porous tile isn't damage, it's contamination. We grade each affected material individually so the line is clear.

Do you do the reconstruction yourselves?

Yes. We hold the remediation and the build-back under one team, which means you don't have to coordinate a remediator, a drywall sub, and a flooring crew on overlapping schedules. It also means the rebuild only starts after structural drying and post-remediation verification confirm the area is ready.

Will my homeowners insurance cover mold damage?

It depends on the source. Sudden, accidental water events — burst pipes, appliance failures, storm-driven roof leaks — are usually covered, with mold as a secondary covered consequence subject to a sub-limit (often $5,000 to $10,000 in NC policies). Long-term seepage and deferred maintenance are typically excluded. We document the moisture source thoroughly so your claim is defensible.

What about my furniture and personal contents?

Hard, non-porous contents are HEPA-vacuumed and antimicrobial-treated on site. Soft goods — upholstered furniture, mattresses, clothing — are evaluated case by case; some respond to professional cleaning, others are documented as total losses for the claim. We never destroy contents without your written authorization.

How do I know when it's safe to occupy the room again?

Post-remediation verification. After build-back, an independent or in-house IEP collects clearance samples and compares indoor counts against outdoor controls. We provide a written PRV report. Until that report is in your hand, the room isn't signed off, regardless of how it looks.
