The honest version: ‘black mold’ is a phrase, not a species.

When most people say black mold, they mean Stachybotrys chartarum — the toxigenic species associated with the worst news stories. The trouble is that several other dark-pigmented molds look identical to the eye, and we’ve seen homeowners panic over Cladosporium and pay for expensive remediation that wasn’t warranted, while real Stachybotrys grows quietly behind a wall ten feet away.

Identification first. Lab samples come back with species and counts. Then the scope is built around what’s actually present, not the colloquial label.

When it is Stachybotrys, the protocol is strict: full PPE, sealed containment, HEPA filtration, removal of porous substrate, and repair of the moisture source. The species doesn’t live without persistent water, so removing the water removes the conditions for it to return.

What goes wrong

Three risks specific to black mold work.

These come up in nearly every Stachybotrys conversation, and they’re worth understanding before the work starts.

01

Misidentification works in both directions.

Several non-toxigenic species are dark-pigmented and look black to the naked eye. Aspergillus niger and Cladosporium are the two we see most often called 'black mold' on a phone-photo. Lab testing settles it — we don't price a Stachybotrys job until we know it's actually Stachybotrys.

02

DIY exposure to mycotoxins is a real risk.

Stachybotrys chartarum produces trichothecene mycotoxins that don't dissipate just because the visible colony is wiped down. Disturbing a wet, established colony without containment and full-face respiration releases spores and fragments into the rest of the home — and into your lungs.

03

Scrub-and-paint guarantees recurrence.

Bleach on porous materials kills surface growth and stops there. Hyphae extend into the substrate. Without addressing the moisture source and replacing colonized porous material, the colony is back within a season.

Our approach

Identify, contain, remove, then close the source.

Same IICRC S520 protocol used for all mold remediation, with stricter adherence to PPE and containment because the mycotoxin profile justifies it.

  1. 01

    Identification

Air or surface samples to a third-party lab. We get back species and counts before we quote scope. If it's not actually toxigenic, we tell you and the price reflects that.

  2. 02

    Containment with full PPE

6-mil poly containment, negative pressure with HEPA exhaust, full-face respirators, disposable suits. The protocol is the same as standard remediation — Stachybotrys doesn't get a different SOP, it gets stricter adherence to the existing one.

  3. 03

    HEPA + antimicrobial removal

Affected porous materials are bagged and disposed. Surviving structure is HEPA-vacuumed and treated with EPA-registered antimicrobials. Air scrubbers run throughout to keep the contained area at low spore counts.

  4. 04

    Moisture-source repair

Roof leak, plumbing failure, vapor intrusion, drainage issue — the cause is fixed during the same project. Black mold doesn't grow without persistent moisture; remove the water and the species can't return.

★★★★★
We bought a new to us 1964 home last December and to no surprise, we had asbestos popcorn ceilings. We decided to remove the ceilings altogether versus just scraping them. To complicate things even more, we had a plumbing leak in a room that had previously been encapsulated, so we had to deal with insurance to cover a portion of the asbestos removal. Rusty and the whole team at Remtech were such a help from the first moment we spoke! They were responsive, flexible, and knowledgeable. They helped us get insurance what they needed. They even worked with us to do the removal work while we had to be out of town. Asbestos removal and dealing with insurance, especially as we were brand new to the home, was incredibly stressful. Working with Remtech was the opposite – they were helpful and easy to work with that I barely had to think about the work being done. It was a nice break for my brain! They also did a great job. We came home to a CLEAN house with no ceilings! While I’m hoping we never have to go through such a big project again, I know we’d be able to handle it because we can rely on Remtech.

Very fast, professional and responsive. Did floor asbestos abatement for our house for a very reasonable price and they were very quick to schedule to keep us within our very close timeline.

A few months ago I used Remtech Envir. to remove asbestos from the ceiling of my home, and to this day I’m still amazed with their service that I’ve been meaning to write a review, and today’s the day! The whole process went through so smoothly because of their professionalism, punctuality and care. At the end of each day I received an update from Rusty who was the project manager which was super helpful, and because of their expertise I knew the job was getting done correctly. There was a lot of asbestos to remove, and they showed up and delivered hard work to get it done within the time frame that was initially discussed. So grateful we used their services! I would highly recommend!

Our church basement flooded and the old asbestos tiles curled up and had to be removed. Jeff Brewer came over to look at our problem, explained what they would do. He furnished a quote very quickly with a fair price. After checking with two other companies, Jeff’s instructive conversation, ease of manner, willingness to help and a fair price won him the work. As a former contractor, I know how backed up companies can be in their schedule. He told us of a target time about 4-6 weeks off, which was fine. He called a couple of weeks later and had an opening in his schedule and wanted to come earlier. That was great. Their staff arrived on time and delivered a very quick, professional and clean project. This allowed us to get our Fellowship Hall floored and back in operating condition prior to the start of the school year. It is a pleasure to work with a company that communicates well and delivers their service in a superior way.

Remtech came in and did a removal of asbestos when our home developed a leak and the sheetrock ceiling had to be removed. Got right to work, kept us informed every step of the way and did a great job of cleaning up. Would use them again in a heart beat!!

The cost was higher than expected, so I did not move forward at that time. I will use Remtech when I am ready to have the work done. They are very professional and take the time to answer any questions. The rep arrived on time, explained the process and provided the estimate. A very positive experience.

Frequently asked

The black-mold conversation, without the hype.

These are the five questions every Durham homeowner asks. The short answers are below; the longer answers are a free walkthrough.

Is all black mold dangerous?

No, and the term itself is colloquial. 'Black mold' usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which produces mycotoxins, but several other dark-colored species are non-toxigenic. Lab testing distinguishes them. The honest answer is that any mold species in a home is a problem worth addressing — Stachybotrys just gets the most attention because of the health profile.

What is Stachybotrys, specifically?

Stachybotrys chartarum is a dark greenish-black mold that grows almost exclusively on cellulose materials — drywall paper, ceiling tile, paper-faced insulation — that have been wet for at least seven to ten days. It produces trichothecene mycotoxins, which is what drives the health concern. It needs sustained moisture, not just humidity, so it tells you something is leaking somewhere.

Can I test it myself with a hardware-store kit?

We don't recommend it. Petri-dish 'settle plate' kits from hardware stores can't reliably distinguish species, don't quantify counts, and aren't accepted by insurers or industrial hygienists. If you want a defensible answer, the sample needs to go to an accredited microbiology lab. We collect samples and send them on your behalf — the lab report is yours to keep.

Will my homeowners insurance cover black mold remediation?

Same rules as any mold claim in NC. If the moisture source is a sudden, accidental, covered event — pipe burst, appliance failure, storm-driven roof leak — typically yes, with a mold sub-limit between $5,000 and $10,000 on most policies. Long-term seepage and chronic humidity are usually excluded. We document the source thoroughly so the claim is defensible.

What about the safety of children, elderly family, or pets?

Vacate the affected area until containment is built and remediation is complete. Symptoms in sensitive individuals — children, immunocompromised adults, anyone with asthma or chronic respiratory conditions, and pets with respiratory sensitivities — show up earlier and more severely than in healthy adults. Don't sleep in a room with confirmed Stachybotrys exposure if it can be avoided.
