Radon is one of the natural elements on the earth.  It is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that forms as a result of the radioactive decay of radium.  Radon gas is emitted from the rocks and soil of the earth, and enters homes and buildings from cracks and openings in the foundation.  Radon gas in your home can present a significant health risk to your family or building occupants.  Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, and the second leading cause of lung cancer in America.

Radon testing is simple and inexpensive and many home inspectors now include it as part of their home inspection.  Radon mitigation systems are simple and highly effective when properly installed.

All homes and buildings contain some level of radon. The EPA recommends that you should mitigate the radon if it tests higher than 4pCi/L.

Radon Reduction - Key Steps

  • Specifically test for radon
  • Hire a professional for investigation and solutions for mitigation
  • Seal cracks and other openings in the foundation to limit the inflow of radon
  • Install either a passive or active radon reduction system. This may be either a sub-slab depressurization system or a sub-membrane depressurization system or a combination of the two.
